On January 3, 2026, CFNA’s ESL and Driving classes came together for their annual New Year celebration, an event that welcomed students into the new year while honoring the strong and growing community they have built together. CFNA staff & volunteers and students from Afghanistan, Haiti, and many African countries, came together in fellowship to celebrate friendships, learning, and shared journeys toward new beginnings.
The celebration also provided an opportunity to recognize important milestones from the past year, especially within CFNA’s Driving program. In 2025, 40 countries were represented among attending students, and 18 students successfully earned their driver’s licenses, a milestone that represents increased independence, confidence, and opportunity for New American families. One such student, Eidie from Somalia, shared how receiving his license has transformed his daily life. “When I came to class a year ago, I hope to get license…now I get license and buy my own car and I don’t ask others for transportation help. I drive to work, the grocery store, and other important places,” observed Eidie, demonstrating how his time at CFNA was both empowering and life-changing.
In addition to celebrating student accomplishments, the event highlighted how adults attending the English and Driving classes find community and support through the care of thoughtful volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of others. CFNA volunteer, Shruti, a student from Saint Louis University and recipient of an 1818 Grant, joined the event to distribute “Stay Well” kits to ESL and Driving participants. Her project, focused on health and well-being, provided families with essential medical supplies and health education materials, including blood pressure cuffs, weight scales with record books, glucose monitors, and oximeters. Before distributing the supplies, Shruti took time to demonstrate proper use of each item to the 13 recipients (from Afghanistan, Somalia, Haiti, and Congo) and shared that she would provide reminder videos and remain available during future classes for ongoing support.
The January 3 celebration was a meaningful reminder of what can be accomplished through community, education, and collaboration. Scripture reminds us of this – “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Heb. 10:24). By honoring student achievements, welcoming new beginnings, and supporting family health, the ESL and Driving programs began 2026 with gratitude, hope, and a renewed commitment to serving and caring for one another.
