From Volunteer to Intern: Nanama Adu
/My name is Nanama Adu, a rising high school senior at Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience. I was born and raised in Ghana and moved to the U.S. seven years ago. I first got connected to CFNA while working at Selah Textiles with Ms. Amy Zeigler, who mentioned volunteer opportunities on Thursdays. I have now spent three amazing years under CFNA’s roof, and am currently an intern for the organization.
My summer internship experience has been incredibly insightful. On the day-to-day, I help teach English to New Americans through using flashcards and books, and guide them as they work on their pronunciation. I also assist individuals who are preparing to get their driver’s licenses by teaching them related vocabulary and sharing helpful resources.
One thing I’ve learned during my internship is how much effort immigrants and refugees put into adapting to a new culture. That has taught me patience and inspired me to work even harder toward building my own future.
I’m incredibly grateful to CFNA for the opportunity to intern and for allowing me to meet and support others in the same ways I needed help when I first arrived in America.
