Transition Update

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Rev. Dr. Allan and Carol Buckman have shared their decision to transition from the pivotal leadership roles they have held since the inception of Christian Friends of New Americans over two decades ago. After a lengthy career in world missions for Allan and careers in teaching and then real estate for Carol, they were looking forward to retirement. Yet something caught Carol’s eye. She became aware that a group of refugees from an area of Nigeria where they had worked as LCMS missionaries had been resettled in the St. Louis area. With a burden to help those New Americans, she and her friend Karen Vaughn began computer classes for them in the basement of Messiah Lutheran Church in St. Louis. Those modest origins marked the commencement of a venture into which the Buckmans would dedicate the next two decades of their lives.

Nevertheless, recognizing the rhythm of life, Allan and Carol acknowledge that the time has arrived to entrust the baton to a new generation of leaders. They believe these successors can build upon the foundation laid by God, and with His ongoing guidance and blessings, propel and expand this crucial ministry far into the future.

Though change may evoke apprehension, it is equally a moment to rejoice in the accomplishments of CFNA, made possible by the collaborative efforts of numerous individuals—staff, volunteers, and supporters—as highlighted in this and previous editions of CFNA eNews. Over the years, the ministry has extended its embrace to over three thousand New Americans, who, having sought refuge in our nation, often after enduring tragic circumstances, have been genuinely served with tangible expressions of the love of Christ, both in word and deed.  In gratitude, we lift our hearts in thanks to God for Al and Carol, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to Christ and His mission.

The Board has embarked upon a thoughtful and intentional approach to the transition process, recognizing the need for clarity in roles, governance, and future planning. It is common for organizations to undergo such transitions, and having a clear process in place will contribute to a smoother and more successful transition.  While there is much to do, the Board has already taken these first steps:

  1. Consultant for Transition Study:

    • The Board of Directors of CFNA contracted with a consultant to conduct a transition study.

    • The purpose of the study was to gather information that will help guide the transition and CFNA's future direction.

  2. Allan Buckman's Resignation and Transition:

    • Allan Buckman has resigned from his position as Chair of the Board, effective January 1, 2023.

    • Douglas Rutt will assume the role of Chair of the Board.

    • Allan Buckman will stay on for a brief interim period as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

    • The transition aims to move from a founders-led ministry to one led by the Board and Staff.

  3. Bylaws Revision:

    • The Board is in the process of revising CFNA's bylaws.

    • The revision is intended to provide clearer definitions of the qualifications and roles of Board members.

  4. Challenges and Future Planning:

    • The transition involves challenges, including defining roles, qualifications, and establishing a clear vision for CFNA.

    • Developing a strategic plan for the future of CFNA is identified as a significant challenge.

    • The administrative team is expected to play a key role in the vision and strategic planning process.

Keep an eye out for future editions of CFNA eNews for additional information as we make progress. We humbly request your prayers for the entire CFNA family as we chart our path for the future.
