Celebrating the Hands and Hearts Behind CFNA

On August 26, 60 CFNA volunteers, Board members, staff, and summer interns gathered together in Ascension Lutheran Church’s basement for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Night.
The evening was filled with laughter and moments of gratitude expressed towards those who spent countless hours supporting our New American friends. Pastor Matt Clark of Ascension – and CFNA Board Member – opened the evening with prayer before attendees flocked over to the charcuterie spread carefully prepared by Amy Zeigler and several staff and volunteers.
While attendees made their way to the food, others sat down to enjoy the music provided by Rhoda Mapenzi, a high school student who recently interned at CFNA. Singing in her native tongue of Swahili, Rhoda beautifully portrayed God’s heart for every nation and tongue to worship the King of Kings together.
Filled with food, music, and a few minutes of fellowship, the volunteers were then brought together to hear Dr. Judith Meyer, Board Chair, speak about the blessing that is volunteerism. To further show appreciation for our volunteers, CFNA’s Communications Associate, Dan Hampton, created a video where ministry coordinators expressed their sincere thanks to volunteers for their diligence and hard work.
Stories of volunteers who have graciously supported the organization were shared as well. Tim Schrader, a long-time volunteer, related how he was able to witness his Christian faith to a Muslim – a reflection of CFNA’s unique mission to welcome in New Americans and share the love of Christ with them.
Gentil Karangwa’s story – from someone receiving help to then sharing the love of Christ as a volunteer – portrayed the faithfulness of God and His transformative power in the lives of New American friends.
As an effort to show appreciation for our volunteers, two special awards were presented. The first, conducted by Amy Zeigler, recognized 11 volunteers who served more than 50 hours within one year. It is a joy and privilege to have so many hard working individuals (notably youth) who commit their time to this organization – thank you!
The second award category added a fun twist – a superlatives ceremony! CFNA ministry coordinators selected 2 volunteers to receive a funny, light-hearted, or heartwarming title. Laughter and smiles were exchanged as volunteers came up to receive their “Parallel Parking Guru” or “Master of Chaos-to-Order” certificate.
Needless to say, the event went very well thanks to the volunteers, Board members, and staff who attended and prepared for this special event. My sincere thanks to Ascension Lutheran Church as well for allowing CFNA to celebrate in their space.
On behalf of CFNA, thank you to all of our volunteers – your dedication to refugees makes it possible for more folk to know who Jesus is and be touched by His love for them.
